China’s New Top 7 Cities for Manufacturing

China once again holds the record for having the largest city in the world (it’s Chongqing, with 31 million people), and with that comes the reputation of having the world’s largest outsourcing hubs.  China is home to 7 of the 10 busiest ports in the world.  These days, when a US company is seeking China manufacturing as an option for making their products, these top cities come to mind.

In this blog, we will highlight the top seven China manufacturing cities and their busy ports.

#7  Tianjin

The largest manufacturing hub and port of Northern China? That would be Tianjin. The port serves Mongolia and 11 Chinese provinces. Tianjin is located next to the Haibe River. In fact, the city has set lofty standards for economic growth as they aspire to hold China’s #3 position for imports. It’s also currently the center for China’s modern mechanics and textile industries and they are continuing to grow.

#6  Guangzhou Manufacturing

Although Guangzhou has no direct sea access, the capital city has another one of China’s large ports.  Guangzhou is located at the estuary of the Pearl Delta River and offers a direct routed to Taiwan. Guangzhou is easily accessible to various major highways and railways that are integrated with the national network. As such, accessibility to and from the port sets this port apart.  Guangzhou’s top manufacturing industries are in automotive, petrochemical, and, electronics. For example, leading automotive brands like Honda, Nissan, and Toyota manufacture in Guangzhou. Sone and several other top electronic companies also have large installations in Guangzhou.

#5  Qingdao

Qingdao is also one of China’s major economic engines with diverse manufacturing in many industrial areas including biopharmaceuticals, electronics, fine chemicals, petrochemicals, machinery, automobiles, building materials, and metallurgy. The city also heads up manufacturing textiles and garments. Qingdao’s graphical location on the coast of the Yellow sea makes it one of China’s most vital harbor cities.

#4  Ningbo

The city of Ningbo has experienced its rapid growth thanks to its location just south of Shanghai. As a result, it’s now acknowledged as one of China’s national logistic hubs. The city boasts a variety of China manufacturing industries such as chemicals, electrical machinery, telecom equipment production, and IT devices.

#3  Hong Kong

There’s no doubt the city of Hong Kong still holds the standard for economic growth and development in China. In fact, the main industries which the city has clear advantages for further development involve medical equipment technology, education, and innovative technology.  Testing and certification services and environmental industries account for nearly 9.5% of GDP.

#2  Shenzhen Manufacturing

Shenzhen is the manufacturing hub for electronics and home to the world’s second busiest port. Since the 1980s, Shenzhen has continued to develop into one of China’s top Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and its logistics sector is one of the most developed in China. Shenzhen’s major manufacturing industries remain strong in electronics, telecommunications, and computers. Some of the world’s most popular brands, like Apple and LG, utilize China manufacturing in Shenzhen. At the same time, retail giants like Walmart have an Asian headquarters and global procurement center here.

#1  Shanghai

As one of the top 5 largest cities in the world, Shanghai is not only China’s financial hub but also it plays a key role in China’s heavy industry. The largest steelmakers in China are based in Shanghai. This is why automobile manufacturing remains the city’s most important industry. Companies like Volkswagen and General Motors have their China plants located here. Shanghai is also a leading manufacturer of plastics, ICs, ethylene, microcomputers, and mobile phones.
