The pet product industry in the U.S. is large and very healthy. But did you know the industry is also strong and growing throughout Asia where many of these products are manufactured? No matter where we’re from people around the world love their pets! This is why the industry continues to grow and is definitely here to stay.
The Pet Product Industry in the U.S.
Americans love their pets. There are as many commercials for pet food as for human food and most grocery stores (not pet product stores) have a least one full aisle devoted to pet products. According to the National Pet Owners Survey, 68% of U.S. households own one or more pets and people spend big bucks on their little pals.
The APPA National Pet Owners Survey indicates that the average dog owner spends $48 per year on pet toys and the average cat owner spends $31 per year. Americans are forecasted to spend more than $75 BILLION on their pets in 2019, including $31 BILLION on food and $16 BILLION on supplies. The pet product industry is obviously big business in the U.S. But just how big is the pet industry in Asia?
Pet Industry in Asia
Asia has a booming market for pet products and is the third-largest consumer of pet products. According to Spire Research, the pet care industry in Asia is expected to grow 8% annually from 2017 to 2022. As one might expect, the pet products market in Asia varies substantially from country to country. Let’s take a closer look.
Within a decade it’s likely that China will exceed the U.S. as the world’s largest market for pet products and services. In 2017 pet owners in China spent $25 billion on their pets, up 27% from the year before. Pet food represents 37% of these expenditures with accessories accounting for 26%.
The pet products market in Japan is strong but stable and was worth about $12.6 billion in 2017. Due to the space constrictions in Japanese housing, many people have a preference towards cats over dogs.
According to the KB Financial Group, one in four South Koreans owns a pet and spends an average of $89.95 on them monthly. Euromonitor International estimates the South Korean market for pet products at $1.57 billion in 2019, up 5.4% from the previous year.
Asian Pet Product Manufacturing
With the market for pet care products growing in both the U.S. and Asia pet product manufacturing, as you would expect, is also on the rise. Asian manufacturers produce products for sale throughout Asia as well as for export to the United States and around the world.
Some of the most popular pet products manufactured in China, Vietnam, and other Asian countries include:
- Dog and cat cages
- Dog and cat sofas
- Cat trees
- Pet clothing
- Feeding bowls and equipment
- Grooming brushes
- Pet shampoo and other cleaning products
