China has long been the manufacturing hub for smartphones and electronics. The iPhone is manufactured in China. Now, China is emerging as much more than a factory. It’s becoming a leader in technological innovation and in particular the mobile industry. China has more than 700 million active smartphone users, a truly staggering market.

But one former Silicon Valley insider says China is no longer a factory hub lacking imagination. It has become a hotbed of crazy innovation.
“People think about China as copycats, but they don’t expect to see the kind of innovation that they see here when they arrive,” says Hugo Barra, former Google executive and current Vice President of Chinese cult smartphone maker Xiaomi.
It seems likely we’ll see China start making waves in the mobile app market here in the US in the very near future.
